My friend, who is apping Tohru, described the set up of the manga in a way I really liked, so I thought I would quote her directly here as my second “link” -
“The manga itself is based on a series of light novels, though there is not a lot of difference in plot (aside from Natsuno being a more major character).
It all starts in a small village called Sotoba, far from any big cities (and any hope of rescue really, let's be serious). It appears that an epidemic is spreading through the village, killing the inhabitants without any sign of how it is spread or who the next victim might be. Coincidentally, the epidemic began not long after a new family moved into town and set up a large, gaudy castle of a home at the other end of the village. The mother and daughter seem to have a curious skin condition that only allows them to be outside at night. That's right. Vampires just moved in.”
Tatsumi has been a servant of this vampire family, the Kirishiki, and its leader, Sunako, for an unknown number of years previous to arriving in Satoba. He is one of the higher ranked shiki because of his tenure and abilities, and plays an important part in collecting new victims and adding shiki to the vampire's ranks.
Age: No actual age is ever given for Tatsumi – he appears to be in his mid-20's, possibly almost 30. That is, however, only his physical body – as a shiki, he seems to have been following Sunako, the head of the Kirishiki family, for years, and is possibly several decades old.
Canon point: I will be taking Tatsumi about mid-series – he has just made Tohru “kill” Natsuno, and the number of shiki in the town is only just starting to grow above a handful. He is aware of which members of the town are getting wise to what is happening, but doesn't know that Natsuno is alive.
Personality: Tatsumi's personality is most definitely unnerving - not just to the reader, but also to the unfortunate shiki over whom he maintains a position of control, and any poor human that might become his target. He is incredibly charming, and can make himself appear cute, friendly, and almost helpless at times – even when speaking to those who know his true nature, he easily puts on a playful tone and a disarming smile. He often makes sure to present this face to people he is attempting to gain the trust of, or get closer to, at least before he has authority over them.
Beneath this initial, attractive facade lies a sadistic, sociopathic vampire who seems to take pleasure in the fear, pain, and discomfort of others, whether it be physical or emotional in nature. He relishes in the position of power that has been given him by the Kirishiki family, and those beneath him learn quickly to obey his commands or suffer the consequences. He makes no empty threats and enjoys doling out his punishments – he isn't reckless, however, and only uses such abusive force when he knows it will make an important point or teach the rest of his subordinates a lesson. (Not to say he doesn't thoroughly look forward to the opportunity to penalize.)
He is, in a sense, playfully cruel - even when showing his true face, he is quick to smile and tease, and the expression is all the more menacing because of it. He can switch from happy to deadly serious in a flash, and does, often – this makes it hard for people to predict or understand his true intentions, and adds to how frightening he can be. He can control when the darkness of his intentions flits into his eyes, though he can be relatively “normal” when having discussions with those he doesn't feel the need to intimidate.
He explains his motivation for following Sunako and the Kirishiki family in more recent chapters of the manga, describing himself as a nihilist who wants only to witness the destruction of those around him, shiki and human alike. He wants to perpetuate the situation that is created by an infestation of shiki – the inevitable downfall of predator and prey as the former eventually kills off the latter, leaving themselves without any way to support their own existance and eventually causing their own extinction. He wants to watch the world burn, and be the only one left standing, able to appreciate what has happened.
Also, I feel its important to add that he has an interesting fashion sense, as do many of the more senior Kirishiki vampires – he tends to favor track suits or body suits, some in rather flashy colors or cuts. The outlandish outfits tend to show off his muscular form, something vain and threatening, which I feel fits him well.
Powers/Abilities:
The vampires in Shiki have similar powers to the classic vampires we are used to, and Tatsumi is no exception – he possesses strength beyond that of a normal human, and can easily debilitate even strong, healthy targets with brawn alone. This sense of enhanced muscle control also seems to give the creatures more speed and stealth than they had when they were alive, and he uses both of these traits to his advantage as well, often seeming to appear right out of the darkness. (These powers of speed and stealth are also accompanied by an ability to heal beyond normal mortal capabilities.)
The shiki also have the power to hypnotize and command their prey, as other vampires in popular lore do, and thus are able to feed off of their unresisting targets for three days. They must drink blood to survive, and are subject to other limitations commonly associated with the mythology – they show an aversion to holy objects in the manga, though they don't seem to be harmed by them, and can only enter a house or building once they are invited inside. They cannot drink their own blood, for it has alchoholic and almost poisonous properties to them – many of their kind fall into a sort of self-punishing, pathetic state where they become addicted to the numbing affects of their own blood, much like human drug addicts.
Lastly, most shiki cannot go out in the sun and are unable to stay awake during the daytime. This, however, is where Tatsumi varies from the norms of his kind – he can be awake during the day, and safely walk in sunlight. Shiki with this power are called jinrou, or “werewolves,” and there are only two in the Kirishiki family's current ranks. This power makes him a force to be reckoned with, as it gives him the ability to keep tabs on the human residents of the town and how much they know, as well as mete out punishment to those shiki that fall out of line.
